Track Busway FAQs – Flexible Overhead Power Distribution

The steel family offers 20A and 40A configurations, with applicable length data sheets specifying a 600V maximum; single-deck lengths have two hot conductors plus neutral, while coordinated double-deck arrangements support three-phase plus neutral and isolated ground where configured. T225 supports three-phase, 50/60Hz configurations up to 225A per phase and 600Vac, with Standard, IG, N2 and N2IG options; use the ratings of the selected compatible components.

Track Busway features a continuous insulator that complies with the UL “Finger Safe Probe” standard. Conductor arrangements vary by product family and configuration; use the selected product’s data sheet.

T40 is our 40A Track Busway system; T225 is our 225A Track Busway system. The system rating is per feed. Each tap-off has its own marked current rating, voltage, pole count and protection requirements. Select the busway family first, then the tap-off configuration; T40 and T225 tap-offs are not interchangeable.

A T40-compatible tap-off is not automatically rated 40A, and a T225-compatible tap-off is not rated 225A simply because of its system name. Use the selected assembly’s marked ratings and approved project requirements. See the tap-off selection guide.

Choose 40A steel Track Busway for smaller equipment loads, lighting and flexible support areas; choose 225A/T225 aluminum Track Busway for higher-capacity three-phase equipment rows, up to 225A per phase. Select voltage, phase, conductor arrangement, feeds and compatible taps from the actual equipment loads and approved project layout.

Both 40A steel and 225A/T225 Track Busway require support points no more than 10 feet apart. Follow the product-specific installation instructions for support locations and the supported-load limit.

The main components include runs (straight sections), joiners, elbows, tees, crosses, jumpers, feeds, and plug-in tap boxes, along with accessories for lighting, data, and mounting.

Use the compatible suspension hardware and mechanical/electrical joints for the selected product family. Space support points no more than 10 feet apart and follow that family’s installation instructions for support locations and assembly.

For both 40A steel and T225 systems, the maximum total load between support points spaced no more than 10 feet apart is 100 lb, including the busway’s own weight. Project drawings may specify a lower allowance, including 50 lb for arrangements where grid members share support loading. Follow the lower project-specific limit and account for intersecting runs and attached loads together; do not assume a separate 100 lb allowance in each grid direction. Confirm the approved support arrangement before installation.

Yes. Qualified personnel may relocate a breakered tap-off power drop while the busway remains energized. Switch the unit’s integral circuit breaker OFF before removal and keep it OFF throughout removal, relocation, and reinstallation. Switch the breaker ON only after the unit has been fully reinstalled and secured. Other plug-in devices must be handled according to their product-specific instructions.

Yes. Both 40A steel and 225A/T225 aluminum Track Busway are finger-safe and Listed to UL 857 Busway Standards. Tap-off units interlock to maintain secure electrical contact.

Use compatible components within their marked ratings and the applicable listing, installation instructions and approved project design. For breakered tap-off units, qualified personnel must switch the integral breaker OFF before installation or removal and keep it OFF throughout relocation and reinstallation. Switch it ON only after the unit is fully installed and secured, where the product instructions permit that procedure. Other devices must follow their own instructions. Review the system-specific safety and listing documentation. Product selection does not replace the project electrical-safety assessment.

Review the ETL listing scope, product labels and controlled documentation for the exact busway, feeds, joints and tap-off assemblies selected. The project team must verify available fault current, protection, grounding, supports, environment and the locally adopted electrical code. Housing grounding is standard on both 40A steel and 225A/T225 Track Busway, and dedicated-ground and isolated-ground options are available. Dedicated ground adds an internal conductor bonded to the housing grounding path; isolated ground uses a separate insulated path through compatible busway, feeds, taps, receptacles and field wiring, while retaining the standard equipment-grounding path. Plug-in devices are designed with a ground-first feature, meaning they automatically ground to the housing before connecting to energized conductors. This ensures every unit is safely grounded as soon as it’s installed.

Yes. Dedicated Ground / DG is available as a project-specific configuration where specified and supported. In a dedicated-ground configuration, an added internal grounding conductor is bonded to the equipment-grounding path and housing/enclosure ground. This is different from Isolated Ground / IG, where the insulated grounding path is maintained separately through compatible components and field wiring.

Isolated-ground receptacle options are available when specified on supported factory-assembled tap-off configurations. USA TrackBusway does not sell loose standalone receptacles.

200% neutral, also searched as 200 percent neutral, is available only as a project-specific 225A / T225 conductor configuration where supported. It must be coordinated with drawings, load calculations, voltage system, and electrical engineer requirements.

200% Neutral + Isolated Ground can be specified as N2IG where supported by the selected 225A / T225 configuration. Coordinate busway lengths, feed units, tap-off units, drawings, and electrical design before ordering.

Track Busway provides overhead plug-in power access and compatible connection points that can be repositioned as layouts change. Its modular sections and tap-offs can reduce the amount of branch wiring rebuilt for a planned equipment move. Compare initial and future costs for the actual project using our cost worksheet; installation-time and lifetime-cost savings are not fixed percentages.

Up-front hardware can cost more than conduit. Good planning is needed for support spacing, load balancing, and future capacity.

Compatible plug-in devices can be relocated within the approved layout when load capacity and clearances permit. Follow the exact product instructions and project electrical-safety procedures. Changes to feeds, busway sections or upstream distribution can require additional work and planned shutdowns.

Yes. Choose compatible breaker ratings and outlet types (receptacles, IEC or hardwire) to match your equipment and selected busway system. Optional power monitoring is available for 225A/T225 configurations.

Critical power monitoring is available at T225 feeds and individual T225 power tap-off units. Selected tap-off builds offer Schneider PM5000-series or HDPM6000 monitoring in the product selector. Feed meters measure the run; monitored tap-offs provide measurements at selected equipment connections.

Busway eliminates pipe bending and wire pulls, so installs are typically much faster. Expansions and reconfigurations can be done in hours, not days.

We provide adjustable hangers and fittings (elbows/tees/crosses) to route around obstructions, maintain working clearances, and hit the correct drop points

Follow the selected system’s installation, operation and maintenance instructions for inspection and servicing. Maintenance-free joint design does not mean the whole installation needs no inspection. For T225, inspect before energization and whenever damage or abnormal operation is suspected. The manual requires de-energizing, lockout/tagout and verification of absence of voltage before inspection, servicing or maintenance. T225 manual.

Yes. Use lower-amp series for lighting circuits and mid/high-amp series for equipment power. You can mix tap-offs along the same run if it’s engineered for the combined load.

Unlike traditional busway styles with fixed tap-off points, Track Busway has an open channel that accepts plug-ins anywhere along the run. This flexibility lets you bring power to the exact location you need it, instead of rearranging equipment to fit existing outlets.
